I still want some kind of powerful Intel Mac that can run Mojave for gaming and my iTunes library (the combination of Music, TV, and Podcasts on Catalina and newer is an absolute dealbreaker for me) so I’m thinking about getting a 2013 Mac Pro or possibly an iMac Pro, but now that I’ve gotten used to the M1 Max’s performance it has me wondering if a supercomputer from 5-10 years ago will be “fast” enough for me. I recently got an M1 Max MacBook Pro and it really opened my eyes at how slow and frustrating a lot of applications were on my 2015 MacBook Pro and 2010 Mac Pro, when I had thought those could run them perfectly fine.

But practically anything beyond that was slow, miserable, and hampered by software and user interfaces that were designed by coders rather than UI designers (well, that’s still a big problem with open source software like Blender, and of course Adobe is too afraid to replace Illustrator’s hopelessly outdated UI and design mechanics that should have been abandoned in the ‘90s). Just about the only take that old computers can do well is word processing, they’re actually pretty great at that because of the lack of distractions, but even then it can be a pain getting stuff into modern formats.

Old computers are fun to play around with, but unbelievably slow and frustrating to do any kind of serious work on, especially when it comes to multimedia. And of course my response was that I don’t actually want to use the vintage computer. One time when I mentioned that idea on Reddit someone asked me why I wouldn’t flip that workflow, set everything up on the vintage computer and then render on a modern computer in a tiny fraction of the time the vintage computer would take.

It’s long been a dream of mine to set up a CGI rendering system (either some kind of old Mac or an SGI or something) and figure out a workflow that would let me build and test scenes in a modern program like Blender and then render them in vintage software on a vintage computer for that authentic retro CGI vibe.
